REGENERATIVE ORTHOPEDIC MEDICINE

Dr. Truong has extensive experience in the non-operative management of musculoskeletal injuries. She has been using PRP and regenerative cell therapy since 2007.

What is Cellular Therapy?

You have probably hurt your joints at some point, especially if you play a sport. When you suffer an injury like that, the healing process can be long and difficult, and may involve expensive and painful surgeries. Thankfully, there is a treatment available that is natural, non-surgical, requires very little downtime, and is able to achieve healing results that are tailored to your specific injury and needs.

Cellular orthopedic medicine harnesses the body’s natural healing abilities in many different ways, sometimes using samples of the patient’s own bone marrow or fat cells to treat joint injuries. These marrow and fat cells are then filtered and centrifuged to isolate the regenerative cells, which are then injected with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) into the injured site. Another option includes injecting a substance that induces a healing response (prolotherapy).

Regenerative orthopedics can be your key to a successful healing process. To learn more about cellular therapymake an appointment with Dr. Truong today!

Regenerative Orthopedic Medicine Fredericksburg

There are many different kinds of cellular therapy procedures that can treat a variety of different injuries.

Autologous Regenerative Cell Injection Therapy

Autologous regenerative cell therapy uses the patient’s own bone marrow and fat to induce healing. A small amount of the patient’s bone marrow is extracted from a place at base of the spine called the iliac crest, while the fat regenerative cells are harvested from a small amount of fat taken from the patient’s hip or outer thigh. The cells are then placed in a centrifuge and spun at a high speed to separate the mesenchymal regenerative cells (MSRs) − which help induce healing − from other blood cells.

Autologous regenerative cell therapy can be used to treat the following injuries:

  • Advanced arthritis

  • Severely degenerated tendons

  • Ligaments

  • Cartilage

  • Spinal discs

  • Chronic fractures

Regenerative Prolotherapy

This therapy treats two kinds of tissues: tendons and ligaments. The therapy involves injecting a mild proliferant, which irritates cells, making them release proteins that cause inflammation. This inflammation causes the body to enter the healing process. Prolotherapy will cause ligaments and tendons to produce thicker and stronger tissue fibers, and encourage the ongoing creation of tissue.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

After being prepared, the fat or bone marrow cells used in regenerative orthopedic medicine are delivered into the patient together with platelet-rich plasma. To prepare platelet-rich plasma, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge, where it is spun at high speed for about 40 minutes to separate the cells and proteins that induce healing from the other components of the blood. This resulting liquid containing platelets and growth factors is platelet-rich plasma.

The desired result of PRP therapy is to allow the injured area to bear greater stress during activity without pain. When PRP is injected into the damaged area, it stimulates the tendon, ligament, joint, and cartilage, causing mild inflammation that triggers the healing process. As a result, new collagen begins to develop. As this collagen matures, it begins to shrink and causes the tightening and strengthening of the tendons or ligaments of the damaged area.

The following conditions may be treated with PRP:

  • Arthritic joints (knee, shoulder, hips, ankle, foot)

  • Low back pain

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Rotator cuff tears

  • Sports injuries

  • Tennis elbow

As PRP comes from your own body, there are usually no side effects of the therapy, and recovery time in minimal.

Regenerative Orthopedic Medicine Treatments in Fredericksburg, VA

Dr. Truong will determine which regenerative cell therapy (bone, fat, prolotherapy) is best for your condition, and personalize your procedure to your injury and recovery process. Before undergoing regenerative orthopedic medicine, you will be asked to minimize alcohol and tobacco intake, as these substances tend to impede the body’s ability to release cells.

The healing process begins immediately after the injections are given. If appropriately spaced out, there is no limit to the number of PRP treatments one can have, though most people will require one to three treatments. Generally, the repair process takes three months to complete, but in most cases, improvement can be noticed by 2-4 weeks, with maximum recovery by 12 weeks. Your healing and pain-free recovery time depend on what cells are used for your condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Cellular Therapy?

Cellular therapy uses cells from your own body to create a serum that causes your body to heal and restore structure and function to damaged tissue.

How Does Cellular Therapy Work?

The therapy utilizes regenerative cells and growth factors which, when injected into the treatment area, cause mild inflammation, triggering the body’s natural healing process.

What Are the Building Blocks/Tools of Cellular Therapy?

Bone marrow or fat cells are collected from the patient, filtered, and centrifuged to separate and utilize the regenerative cells. A blood sample from the patient is also centrifuged to create Platelet Rich Plasma, which is also rich in growth factors that induce healing. The bone marrow and fat cell serums are combined with PRP and injected into the treatment area, while prolotherapy proliferants can be injected alone. Depending on the patient’s needs, serums from multiple tissue sources can be combined into one.
