If you're looking for a way to improve your sex life, but your erection is just not what you want it to be, read this before you start taking those pills! Over-the-counter medications often worsen ED by treating the symptoms rather than the source.

The elements that control your erection are your penis muscles, blood flow, and overall health. This means treating ED could be as simple as a lifestyle change–i.e., your diet!

Making Small Incremental Changes to Your Diet and Lifestyle

A diet change is not only needed to prevent ED but also to maintain healthy erectile function. If you're struggling with erectile dysfunction, you may be wondering what you can do to improve your health and sexual function, and a healthier diet may be an excellent place to start.

You need to eat a consistent diet of healthy foods to maintain sexual health. Your penis has the highest blood vessel content relative to its size than any other organ in the body. Since the quality of your blood is directly correlated to what you eat, it’s essential to eat healthy foods and avoid unhealthy foods.

You may want to consider following a Mediterranean-style diet. Recent studies found that men (40 to 60) who followed a Mediterranean diet had better erectile function than those who didn't, according to this paper.

What to Eat and What to Avoid

So it begs the question, what foods should you eat consistently, and what foods should you avoid? Again, let’s take a look at the Mediterranean diet. You’ll want to trade out your red meats for lean meats, like fish and chicken (without the skin). You also may want to up your fruit intake along with whole grains.

Another group of foods you want to avoid is those high in saturated fats. Saturated fat is found mainly in animal-based products like dairy and meats. Specifically, you should monitor your consumption of beef, lamb, pork, and chicken (with the skin). Other fatty foods like ice cream, butter, lard, and oils are also risk factors for ED and overall health.

Lastly, obesity is a massive contributor to ED. It can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, and other blood-related diseases. Obesity is considered a BMI of over 30. Studies show that men with a BMI over 30 show increased rates of erectile dysfunction due to lowered testosterone.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re an older gentleman looking to improve erectile function or a young man learning how to maintain it, your diet is the best place to start. Try the Mediterranean diet and cut out red meats, saturated fats, and all-around fatty foods. Combined with more activity, like High Impact Interval Exercises, you’ll see an increase in erectile function in no time.
