Anxiety stems from a deep-seated fear of not being safe and a concern that bad things will happen, which we won't be able to handle. This also often escalates into a fear of being unworthy and unlovable. These fears trigger our fight-or-flight response, causing constant worry, stress, and pressure.

This state of anxiety, while meant to protect us, can ironically lead to more harm than good. It can also negatively affecting our physical health. It's a cyclical process where the brain's protective mechanism ends up causing more pain and distress.

The Origins of Self-Destructive Behaviors

Harmful behaviors are often not conscious choices but are rooted in the beliefs and ideas absorbed during childhood from our surroundings. We inherit beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world from our culture, society, and caregivers.

Both significant (big T) and minor (little T) traumas shape these beliefs. For instance, an innocent childhood incident, like being scolded by a parent, can implant a lasting belief of inadequacy. These ingrained beliefs then subconsciously influence our adult life, leading to patterns of self-sabotage and negative relationships.

Impact of Early Life Traumas

Core beliefs formed in childhood significantly shape our adult lives. These foundational beliefs are set usually by age eight. It can influence how we perceive and react to situations unless they are consciously updated in adulthood.

Adults often continue to struggle with insecurities rooted in these early beliefs, affecting their relationships and self-esteem. For example, a negative comment in a relationship can reinforce deep-seated fears of inadequacy.

Interestingly, resolving these childhood issues can have a cascading positive effect throughout one's life. Thus, it can even alleviate the symptoms of trauma experienced in adulthood.


What is Hypnotherapy? How Can It Free You From Anxiety?

Hypnotherapy is misunderstood by many as a gimmick. In reality, it's a profound study of the power of suggestion and the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is controlling about 80% of our actions. It also stores our beliefs and habits. Hypnotherapy aims to access and influence this powerful part of our psyche, addressing the real source of our problems.

Then, ask the question “Where did I get that opinion from?” Determine the origin of this belief, understanding that it's an opinion carve out by past experiences. Finally, “What would you rather believe instead?” Choose a new, empowering belief to replace the old one. This method focuses on changing the internal narrative to foster positive changes in thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

ED is often not just a physical issue but also a psychological one. The mental state plays a crucial role in sexual performance, where negative beliefs and anxieties can impede physical function.
