Reflex Erection

Firstly, we explore reflex erection. This occurs when the penis is physically stimulated. Also, this is an automatic response. It involves a nerve loop from the penis to the spine and back.

Reflex erections can happen during sexual foreplay or masturbation, often bypassing brain involvement.

Psychogenic Erection

The second type, psychogenic erection, arises purely from mental stimulation, such as fantasies or sexual memories. This occurs when the brain sends signals to the penis without any physical touch. This also highlights the significant impact of mental stimuli on physical reactions.

Nocturnal and Morning Erection

The third type is the common nocturnal erection, also known as “morning wood." This occurs during REM sleep and can happen multiple times a night. It can last from five to thirty minutes.
