More Than Just One Type of Erection

Did you know that there’s more to erections than just the act of sex? Surprisingly, there are four distinct types of erections. Let’s will delve into these types and shed light on this often-misunderstood aspect of male physiology.

Reflex Erection

Firstly, we explore reflex erection. This occurs when the penis is physically stimulated. Also, this is an automatic response. It involves a nerve loop from the penis to the spine and back.

Reflex erections can happen during sexual foreplay or masturbation, often bypassing brain involvement.

Psychogenic Erection

The second type, psychogenic erection, arises purely from mental stimulation, such as fantasies or sexual memories. This occurs when the brain sends signals to the penis without any physical touch. This also highlights the significant impact of mental stimuli on physical reactions.

Nocturnal and Morning Erection

The third type is the common nocturnal erection, also known as “morning wood.” This occurs during REM sleep and can happen multiple times a night. It can last from five to thirty minutes. It also plays a crucial role in penile health by increasing blood flow and exercising penile muscles. A lack of nocturnal erections could be an early sign of erectile dysfunction (ED).

Intercourse Erection

The fourth and most commonly recognized type is the intercourse erection. It is triggered by the five senses during sexual arousal. This involves a complex interaction between the brain and physical stimulation, integral to the sexual experience.

Erection can last from a few minutes to several hours, with an average duration of about seven minutes during sexual intercourse. Factors like age, health, stress, and alcohol consumption can influence this duration. Notably, priapism, an erection lasting over four hours, is a medical concern.
